VICTIMS of Haiti earthquake WARNING EXTREMELY GRAPHIC PICTURES
Posted on July 28th, 2010
SLIDESHOW - Warning: graphic images Haiti devastated by massive earthquake A massive 7.0-magnitude earthquake has struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti. The extent of the devastation is still unclear but there are fears thousands of people may have died. Haiti's worst quake in two centuries hit south of the capital Port-au-Prince on Tuesday, wrecking the presidential palace, UN HQ and other buildings. A "large number" of UN personnel were reported missing by the organisation. Many people have spent the night outside amid fears of more aftershocks. The Red Cross says up to three million people have been affected. Describing the earthquake as a "catastrophe", Haiti's envoy to the US said the cost of the damage could run into billions. A number of nations, including the US, UK and Venezuela, are gearing up to send aid. The quake, which struck about 15km (10 miles) south-west of Port-au-Prince, was quickly followed by two strong aftershocks of 5.9 and 5.5 magnitude. The tremor hit at 1653 (2153 GMT) on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said. Haiti earthquake response: Thank you
Posted on July 9th, 2010
The devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on 12 January 2010 killed 230000 people and left another 1.5 million homeless. Thanks to your overwhelming support, Oxfam has been able to assist more than 420000 people - by providing clean water, shelter and basic sanitation, as well as by helping community canteens provide daily hot meals. Remembering 1935′s Killer Earthquake
Posted on June 1st, 2010
Seventy-five years ago on this day, Quetta was struck by a deadly earthquake that left 35000 people dead - nearly *half* of the city's population. Decades on, little has been done towards making buildings and homes safer in Balochistan's earthquake-prone areas. Muhammad Kazim has more.

Amateur Radio Emergency Preparedness
Posted on May 5th, 2010
Kansas City news station KMBC9 reporter Brenda Washington interviews Chet Hallberg about the role amateur radio plays in emergency communications. Specifically, they focus on communications after a large earthquake on the New Madrid fault. In the second part, Chet shows off one of the American Red Cross Disaster Relief vehicles. He goes on to explain the different kinds of equipment in the vehicle and how it has been used recently with the flooding in Arkansas. There is also a mention (plug!) for SkyWarn in the Kansas City area and amateur radio uses with the National Weather Service in times of severe weather. Capture & encode by Bill Kellogg, WD0DXK

Hurricane Hugo – Luquillo, Puerto Rico – September 18, 1989
Posted on May 3rd, 2010
This is my Hurricane Hugo chase video. The footage was taken during Hugo's landfall on the northeast tip of Puerto Rico at Luquillo. In my 25 years of hurricane chasing, this remains, overall, the best footage I have ever been fortunate enough to capture. Though I have been in stronger hurricanes, given that Hugo was a borderline category three/four and the strongest portion of the eyewall passed directly over my location (during daylight hours), I had the rare opportunity to document the full force of an intense hurricane at a direct coastal location. Though significant damage begins about 8 minutes into the video, the peak winds occur between 10 through 21 minutes in, and are sustained near 130mph with gusts to 150-160mph. An anemometer on the island of Culebra (just offshore Eastern Puerto Rico) reported a peak gust of 170mph when the same portion of the eyewall passed over that location a couple of hours prior to reaching Luquillo.
