First U.S. swine flu death confirmed

A government official confirms the first US death from the swine flu, a 23-month-old child who died in Texas. Meanwhile, the government warns the outbreak could get worse. "A child has died from the H1N1 virus," the acting director of the Centers for Disease Control Dr. Richard Besser told CNN's "American Morning" on Wednesday. WHO: Swine flu pandemic not inevitable

Swine flu has crossed the Atlantic with cases now confirmed in the UK and Spain. The World Health Organization has raised the flu alert, but says the pandemic was not inevitable.

Earthquake strikes in Mexico

A strong quake struck southwestern Mexico and was felt in Mexico City 145 miles away. CNN's Myra Cuevas reports. USGS measured the quake's epicenter in the state of Guerrero about 43 miles northeast of Acapulco. Authorities in Acapulco evacuated hotels there, although there were no reports of damage, according to CNN affiliate TV Azteca.
