300 dead in China as 6.9 earthquake hits Qinghai province

A powerful earthquake has rocked China's western province of Qinghai killing at least 300 people. State media claims around 8000 have been injured. The 6.9-magnitude quake has toppled many houses, while roads have been damaged or blocked by landslides.

The 7.9 magnitude tremor, which was focused in China's Sichuan Province, is estimated to have killed at least 50000 people — and that toll is expected to rise dramatically as rescue teams continue to reach the most affected areas. In cities near the earthquake's epicenter, thousands are buried under the rubble of collapsed buildings. Many people are still missing.
