Dr. Nasser Khan assumed the role of chief operating officer at Acadia Healthcare on June 30, 2024, marking a significant milestone for the behavioral health provider. The position represents a newly created role within Acadia Healthcare’s executive structure, reflecting the company’s focus on operational excellence across its nationwide network of facilities.

Nasser Khan joined Acadia Healthcare in September 2022 as operations group president for the company’s Comprehensive Treatment Center division. His initial responsibilities included overseeing 145 facilities across the United States specializing in medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder. Under Khan’s leadership, Acadia Healthcare expanded this division significantly, adding 11 new clinics and mobile vans while improving patient retention metrics.

Khan’s three stated priorities as COO center on people and outcomes. “Two of them are … people and people,” Nasser Khan told Behavioral Health Business. “It’s service to our patients and it’s service to our staff. The third priority is our quality and clinical outcomes. I do believe we already deliver the highest quality care in the industry and do so at scale.”

Before joining Acadia Healthcare, Nasser Khan served as senior vice president of operations at Shields Health Solutions, a national provider of specialty pharmacy services to health systems and a subsidiary of Walgreens Boots Alliance. His prior experience includes serving as head of program and chief medical officer at Biograph Inc., a healthcare technology company. Khan also held progressive operational leadership roles at DaVita, Inc., including division vice president of hospital services, regional operations director, and director of strategy and special projects.

Earlier in his career, Nasser Khan worked as an engagement manager in the healthcare practice at McKinsey & Company, where he focused on growth strategy and operational turnarounds for leading health systems. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Khan holds a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), a Master of Medical Science (M.M.S.), and a Bachelor of Arts in Human Biology from Brown University, where he graduated magna cum laude. His current board service includes serving as a member of the Board of Trustees at the National Association for Behavioral Healthcare.

The COO role assumed by Nasser Khan encompasses oversight of quality and clinical operations, facility operations, and admissions across Acadia Healthcare’s entire network. These responsibilities were previously carried out by John Hollinsworth, the company’s executive vice president of operations, who retired on June 30, 2024. Hollinsworth entered into an advisory role through the end of 2024 to support the leadership transition.

Jacob Cooper, formerly senior vice president and chief operating officer of Acadia Healthcare’s comprehensive treatment center service line, assumed the role of CTC group president following Khan’s promotion to COO. This internal promotion structure reflects Acadia Healthcare’s approach to developing leadership talent within the organization.
